Teach, Test, Challenge

This was the guiding principle while making this level since there were so many mechanics to play with. Every single one of them needed to first be taught to the player. Then they were tested and challenged. It made the level easy to understand, but still challenging and engaging.

Planning

Documentation and planning always come first. For this project I detailed references for the setting, the player, and enemies, and then began plotting the level on paper before moving to 3D.

First Iteration

Here, I had the groundwork for the level almost finished. While all the obstacles were there, the player could easily go out-of-bounds, and there was little detail. However, it was in a good enough state to playtest.

Playtesting

I learned fast what areas of the level needed the most work. This section here had the player moving a heavy box. If they weren't fast enough, a moving wall would sweep them off the platform and they'd have to restart the section. The wall moved way too fast and no players could get past it fast enough.

Second Iteration

After fixing the rough areas I added walls so the player couldn't escape the boundaries as easily.

Third Iteration

Finally, after more playtesting, I put the finishing touches on the level.
