The level that won first place in Ubisoft Toronto NEXT's level design category, made by yours truly.

An ambitious project

Ubisoft Toronto NEXT is a demanding competition. I participated in the level design category, spending four months on my submission, totaling 375 hours of work. This is one of the best levels I've ever made, and I am honored to have been chosen for 1st place.

Maps, maps, maps.

The competition began by having participants plan out their levels on paper. Here is one of the earliest maps I made. The player was an archeologist searching for lost treasure, who had to scour a jungle temple and also deal with an opposing mercenary group.

Difficulties translating from 2D to 3D

During the planning phase of the competition, the level dimensions were left unspecified. Upon moving into stage two of the competition (the 3D block out) it was revealed to me that my level needed to be scaled down. Because of this I had to rework the size and flow of each area, which included removing the Temple's interior entirely.

Flow first, atmosphere later

Greyboxing is all about getting the levels gameplay feel down before the artists worry about making it look pretty.

Starting to come together

After extensive playtesting and many changed to the level design, the level I had imagined was starting to take shape.

Changes, changes, changes

While working on the level, I documented an extensive changelist, as well as made regular updates to the level maps. When compared to the previous map, you'll notice the amount of detail that has been added.

Finalized temple

The final look of the temple. This portion of the level had the most changes. It's interior where the player originally found the treasure was removed due to spatial constrictions. The player must now climb it's exterior to find the treasure at it's very top.
