Alt Controller Brainstorming

At the beginning of the project we spent a lot of time finding examples of different alt controller games we could draw inspiration from. We learned a lot from this exercise.

First Concepts

There were a lot of different concepts we thought of during the design week. We originally thought of a horror game idea where the player had to escape a maze. We eventually moved over to the idea of controlling a game using a model submarine. This is an early concept I made about a deep sea endless runner.

Finalized Game Loop

Finally, after many team disputes, we settled on our idea for Deep Riches. The core game loop was designed by me, and is illustrated there. The player would pilot a submarine, looking for treasure while using special lights and sounds to defend against giant fish.

Development Progression

Here is where I took the time to create the level design within the game (top left corner). Treasure was hidden in clever places or guarded by fish, and the player would have to think carefully about their actions. This level didn't end up making it into the final build, but it was created.

Finalized Game

By the end of the week we had finished work on the game. I created a much more simplistic level, did the sound design and engineering for the game, and playtested to find as many bugs as I could for the programmers.
