A capture the flag level built in Unreal Engine for Fortnite inspired by Hogwarts Castle. One of the best levels I've ever created.

Figuring Out the Spacing

When transitioning from a 2D map to a 3D level, there will always be some difficulties figuring out the spacing.

Keeping the Player Inside the Level

I always found it interesting how players will always try and escape your levels. My approach to stopping them in this level was to make the walls either too high, or make it so if the player escaped they would fall to their death.

It's Not About Creating a Level, it's About Crating an Experience

At this stage in development, I thought my level was too simple. It was just a collection of rooms that didn't really feel special. I had to remember that I wasn't just creating a level, I was creating an epic castle battle arena experience. With that in mind, I added details that would give it this feeling. I made huge towers that gave the map that castle feeling, a destroyed cafeteria that made the area feel lived in, and added debris across the level that made it feel like a battlefield.

Greybox Level

The level was now in a spot where it was ready for multiplayer playtesting. It was built for a 3v3 scenario, and it was sometimes hard finding enough players, but I managed.

First Pass Art

After testing and making gameplay changes to the level, it was time to work on the first pass art.

New Art Direction

While working on the first pass art, I was told by my professor that I was no longer allowed to use a licensed work as inspiration for my level and would have to change the art direction. Rather than base it off of Harry Potter like originally planned, I made it so the castle was abandoned and that an evil cult had taken over.

First Pass Art Showcase

Here is a video showcase of the first pass art that was put in the level. I really enjoyed my time working on this project and I would like to revisit it one day.
